Born Kwon Jiyong (권지용) in Busan, South Korea on August 18, 1988.

His carrier started at age 5 when he joined a children’s group, Little Roo’Ra, that later broke up after they put out their Christmas album.

When he was 8-13 years old, he trained under SM Entertainment as a dancer.

In 2001 he became Korea’s youngest rapper at age 13 and was noticed by Sean of the hip-hop duo Jinusean, who helped him to be signed on with YG Entertainment.

Later with another trainee, Dong Youngbae, a.k.a. Taeyang, became part of their duo, GDYB.

They then became part of a (then) six member group, BIGBANG, one member, former member of B2ST, Hyunseung, left BIGBANG just before their debut.

When G-Dragon started to train under YG Entertainment, he came up with his stage name, deriving it from his actual name of Jiyong. “Ji” sounding like the English letter “G” and “Dragon” coming from the Korean word “yong” which means “dragon.”
