On January 20th and 21st, idols and those in the music industry gathered for the last award show of the year. The Golden Disk Awards an annual award show presented by the Music Industry Association of Korea for outstanding achievements in the South Korean music industry. The awards carry much of the same names as other shows, but this particular show is not based on fan votes.
This event normally takes place in China, however due to weather concerns it was moved to Korea this year. The Golden Disk Awards 2016 saw the hottest acts in the industry. A total of thirty five awards were handed out in thirteen different categories. There were also some amazing musical acts as well. Here is the list of winners at this years GDAs:
Album Of The Year (Disk Daesang): EXO
Song Of The Year (Digital Daesang): BIG BANG – ‘Loser’
Best Artist (Disk Bonsang): Apink, VIXX, f(x), SHINee, BTS, CNBLUE, JongHyun, EXO, Beast, Super Junior
Best Artist (Digital Bonsang): Red Velvet, EXID, AOA, Zion.T, J.Y. Park, Sistar, TaeYeon, KyuHyun, BIG BANG, Girls’ Generation
New Artist Of The Year: iKON, Twice, Seventeen, GFriend
Best Popular Artist By Netizens: SHINee
Best Rap/Hip Hop: San E – ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’
Best Rock: Hyukoh – ‘Play 22’
Global Popularity: EXO
Best Group Vocal: BTOB
Best Solo Vocal: Jung YongHwa
iQiyi Best of Male Artist: BIG BANG
iQiyi Best of Female Artist: Kim TaeYeon
Next Generation Star: Monsta X
At this moment in time, Super Junior has officially won the most, including member’s solo works, with nineteen awards. Girls’ Generation is the only girl group to be in the top five as they hold seventeen awards, followed by CNBLUE with fifteen awards. Not to be out done, SHINee comes in with fourteen awards and Beast has twelve.
Rounding out the year, I was really excited to see who got recognised, especially when it isn’t fan voted. BTOB brought in an award, as well as rookies Monsta X, Twice, GFriend, and Seventeen. Super happy to see Hyukoh’s name on the list and Zion.T. Honestly though, I love all these artists and listened to them all this past year. Can’t wait to see what new groups and music 2016 brings us!
