The group, BTS, (Rap Monster, Suga, Jin, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook) have started to ambitiously drive in a wedge through their first full-length album, ‘Dark & Wild’.
The members of BTS personally participated in the composing, writing, and producing for this official album, which increased their musical maturity as well as the completeness of the album. Their new song, ‘Danger’, expresses their frustrated heart towards a girlfriend who acts like she doesn’t love them back. They show a new charm through the song that stands out for its unique angled choreography and fierce performance.
When we recently met with Rap Monster and Suga prior to them holding their comeback stage for a music broadcast, they revealed their different emotions on coming back with an album by saying, “We believed that we were making a work of art. We couldn’t fall behind since it was an official album. In hopes that it would be a really good masterpiece, we worked hard in making it and it holds many emotions. When we first made the title song, we thought, ‘When will we finish writing this, creating it, and releasing it?’, but once we blinked, we were at the showcase area. It was really fascinating.”
Among the endless amount of boy groups that came out in 2013, BTS distinguished themselves through unique colors and musicality, and are drawing out a distinct line. When I asked about ‘what changed the most since debuting a year and 3 months ago compared to now, the members thought for awhile before answering, “Although we thought that something had changed, while preparing for our comeback, it felt like we had returned back to our debut days.”
Rap Monster added, “Although it’s probably the same for everyone, but our team really practiced or worked without any personal time to ourselves. Because we practiced for so long and were hung up on work, it didn’t feel like anything had changed. Whenever we work on an album, the thoughts of ‘What should we show now’, come to us and I feel we’re gradually becoming adults.”
Continuing on, they revealed their visible goal by saying, “Our final goal is probably to get a triple crown (winning 1st on the 3 public music broadcasts). In the end, you need to at least get a triple crown in order to receive acknowledgement from the public, and our fandom can also secure their spots, and everyone can whisper among themselves that ‘They’re really an amazing team’.”
Rap Monster added, “For now, we don’t care at all about charts. Although we will probably have to get 1st on charts one day, for now it’s ‘if we’re high on the charts, it’s good; if not, oh well’. Because we’re in currently in the process of trying to grasp onto our own colors, we didn’t want to be like others. In order to put up a good fight on the charts, we want to first grasp onto our color, then show good music inside of that, and then have people approve of our music.”
He continued to explain by saying, “I want to do music that others can’t while not becoming swayed by the charts. Although I have enough confidence in creating music targeting the public, we’ve been doing things different from others since our debut such as our trailer or cyphers. We always try to talk about those in their 10’s~20’s, things about our life. We want to convince the public as we show sides of ourselves like this. Although there are songs that reach high ranks on worldwide rankings, we want to convince them through our music and make it so that our songs will line up on the charts. Our goal is to become approved by the public and be approved with, ‘if it’s a song by them, then it’s good’, no matter what story we release.”
He added, “Although ‘Danger’ lacks popular appeal, it has a story and direction when you look straight through what we’ve shown during our career in the long-run. If we suddenly brought out light music and switched to heavy music, then I believe that it wouldn’t fit with what we’ve been showing so far. That’s why we keep insisting that we need to do music like this, and I hope you would understand that the public will also one day become convinced by this.”
The ‘Dark & Wild’ album is the most similar to the leading identity of BTS. With the 8th track as the base, the front half of the album is dark, while the latter half is wild. It has a lot of raw feelings that only BTS possess. Rap Monster commented, “There’s a sweet feel, and there’s also a song that I wrote quickly as if I was really going to fly. To be honest, I believe that if a song is smeared with the feeling that it was made after much thought, I don’t think it’s that great. There are times where you need to write it in 30 minutes and think, ‘This is good’.”
Like this, the reason why BTS is able to show their potential through this flood of boy groups is due to their definite direction and values, along with acknowledgement towards their musicality that differs from any prior group.
To this, Suga expressed his confidence, “I believe that we’re a team that’s strong in raw feelings. Because the naturalness that we become the main factor in creating music and the stage shows strongly, I feel that differentiates us from other groups. Isn’t this exactly what our team’s strength is?”
From an interview last July during their ‘No More Dream’ era, BTS who showed the hopes of “We want to become the team that stands out the most during this year”, “We want to receive the rookie award”, received the rookie award, are opening a solo concert, and earned a strong mania fandom in just one year, giving them the name of ‘super rookies’. As much as their enthusiasm from debut continues to burn more and their experiences increase, we anticipate the actions of BTS who will rise up as the new generation trending group through these promotions.
