You may have been curious about what’s the deal with Korean Dramas or otherwise known as K-dramas. Before you start watching here’s some things to know. No matter which one you choose to watch as your first one, be prepared to go through an array of emotions.  You will be laughing, crying, getting angry at the characters and their antics on screen. They’re not like your typical sitcom or soap opera you may be familiar with.

Unlike other programs, Kdramas last only 16 to 24 episodes at either 3o minutes to an hour each. They can be about varying subject matter, adaptations of mangas or comic books, based off a webtoon, and even be based on historical people and events.

While watching a Kdrama you will notice a few things. You’re going to see a lot of eating and drinking. You will also note some cultural differences when there’s a meal being shared or drinks being served. For example it is proper etiquette to pour a drink for someone else, and they will in turn pour a drink for you.

Another aspect you will notice about Kdramas is touching or lack there of. South Korea is known for its reserved nature and public displays of affection are rare. Touching, holding hands, and even hugging is referred to as “skinship.” Pretty much if the main characters hold hands they just made it to second base. They kiss, and well we have a “home run!” South Korea also has strict guidelines on what can be shown on television. You will also note that there will be very little graphic content and any knives, sensitive content will be censored.

Now you’re ready to watch a Kdrama, but what to choose. There’s so many options from comedy, suspense, action romance or even historical. Here’s some recommendations to get you started:
