Thousands of fans rushed to the theatres to see the new release of, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation“. But did they go for the explosive action and drama of the movie, or for Lee Byung Hun‘s chocolate abs?

The second installment of G.I. Joe topped the weekend box office in both the U.S. and South Korea. Surprising? Not really. What was surprising was the actor’s pristine abs, which drew in thousands of women and added to the total of $41.3 million over its opening weekend.

The American action flick was shown in 761 theatres across the country, and earned 43% more than the original movie, and vastly outsold any domestic film.

Even with Korea’s thriving film industry, foreign movies tend to do well in Korean theatres. Especially with the growing popularity of the Busan International Film Festival, ticket sales for non-Korean movies have steadily increased, with more people willing to see movies with subtitles.

There are several types of foreign films that do better than Korean films, especially action movies, which top the list. Another reason, such as with “G.I. Joe: Retaliation“, is to support a fellow countryman.

This can be said for other films, such as “G.I. Joe“, which Lee Hyung Bun also appeared in, as well as “Ninja Assassin” which starred singer, Rain (Jung Ji Hoon).
