Well ALS Association‘s around the world must surely be doing cartwheels and crying tears of joy at the unimaginable spontaneous success the viral Ice Bucket Challenge has seen since its start.  If you search “als ice bucket challenge” in Google the browser brings back over 130,000,00 results!  It even has its own Wikipedia entry!  The list of notable people who have participated in this challenge is so large, it would probably take days just to watch their videos.  That doesn’t even began to touch on the everyday joe that has joined this amazing challenge!

Now I’ll apologize first, I’m about to use some very large scientific words, but before we get into the amazing videos from our idols I wanted to make sure you, our wonderful readers, understood how very important all this malarkey is.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or as some people know it as  Lou Gehrig’s disease can strike anyone. ALS is a is a neurodegenerative disease with various causes, its symptoms are just as varied. Symptoms of ALS are muscle spasticity, rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle atrophy, and difficulty in speaking, swallowing, and breathing. You lose the ability to start and stop your body, control your own bodily functions and, as one of my fellow writers so aptly put it, “You become an alien in your own body‘”.  ALS occurs without racial, ethnic or social economic prejudice.

There is no cure and medications that are available that prolong the life of the patients by more than a few months. The life expectancy of someone diagnosed with ALS is two to five years, with an average life of quality of just three. There are rare occurrences when the symptoms of ALS stop progressing or even reverse, but no one knows why this happens. One of the most famous people to suffer from ALS and who has beaten the statistical life expectancy of it, is physicist and author Stephen Hawking. Hawking is a role model to all those who suffer from this degenerative disease as he has lived an amazing 40 years with the disease using a voice synthesizer to communicate and a wheelchair for mobility.

A little closer to home for our Korean idols, President Hong Seungsung of CUBE Entertainment has been known to be suffering from the disease for three years now. In Rain‘s Ice Bucket Challenge video, which you will be able to watch shortly, he talks about how important Hong Seungsung has been to him, “My teacher and father figure, who has made me into what I am today, is fighting the disease in his third year. I am frustrated as to how I can help him, [this is] an expression of my gratitude and thankful heart.” Rain completed his challenge and donated $100,000 to ALS to help research for a cure.

I think I have loaded you down with enough information, regardless of what the critics out there are saying, as I mentioned in the “15 Idols Who Should Have Rethought Their Ice Bucket Challenge!“, a 1000% increase in donations tells me that this viral challenge is working its magic for a very important crusade.

So now onto the fun aspect of this challenge, watching our favorite idols get icy wet and cold!

I don’t think we can see an end to these Ice Bucket Challenges any time soon, and that is good thing for both ALS donations and us fans. Cause, let’s be honest, watching our idols get soaking wet is not hard on the eyes!  We have compiled another list here at Officially KMusic for your perusal, this time the criteria was a little different. As I put it to my fellow writers when asking for their help gathering these videos, “some are cute, some are done well, some are men in white shirts“.  I, of course, made sure to include some for our male readers as well, cause water mixed with a female’s shirt, ahem, anyway you’ll see for yourself in a few minutes.

We hope you enjoy this list of Ice Bucket Challenges performed by our idols!  Did we miss one that you thought was done particularly well or perhaps flashed a little six pack our way?  Make sure you let us know in the comment section below!
